The history of the Luckenbill Family in the United States started with 2 brothers:

Johan Ekel and Hendrick Luckenbill.

 They arrived in this country on the Thistle of Glasgow Aug. 29, 1730, in the City of Philadelphia. Click here for ship passenger list.  

According to German Records, they were from Switzerland and lived in Landau and Saabruken before they came to the United States.

 

 

INFORMATION ON JOHANN

Johan Ekel Luckenbill-m. wife was unknown.  It was tradition that he came from Switzerland with a wife and settled in Maxatawny Township, Berks County.  Some older bibliographies show Johann Ekel as having 8 children, others show him as having 2 boys: Christian and Abraham.  I do not have anything from an official source showing the actual children of Johann Ekel.  

Johan Ekel came over in 1730 with a wife.  This raises a question, "Were there children on board the Thistle with him and his wife?"  Also raises another question, "Was Hendrick his brother or his son?"

The minutes of Provincial Council, Courthouse PHIL. Aug 29, 1730 says the following.  List of 77 Palatines, who with their families numbered 260, were imported here in the ship Thistle. Because only the 77 adult males were officially listed as passengers, this leaves the same question: Where there any children of Johan or Hendrick on Board?  I would be inclined to believe there were children onboard.

Anna Barbara Luckenbill b. 1721 b. about 1721 d. 11/7/1803 in Albany Township, Berks County.  She married Johannes Kistler 1740, son of Han Rudolph Kustler and Rosina Elizabeth Aebischer. John Luckenbill -had the following children-according to Bowers church records:

  1. Christian- b. 16Oct 1742 d. 13Dec1814 m. Catherine b. Sept 5 1746, Died 2 Jun 1821. Was a farmer and land 0wner in Perry Township/owned 200 acres. Only child listed in Bowers Church is John.  Christian's and Catherine's  grave stone, at St. Paul's Union Church, Manheim Twsp is inscribed: Those who went swoing in tears, now sing as they reap Psalm 126.   Christian served as a 2nd class in the 3rd Batallian for the Revolutionary War on Apr 23, 1780 under Capt. Baldi's Company of Broanschweis Township.  Children:

Abraham -married Margaretha Luckenbill. Abraham served in the Revolutionary War.  Records from Windsor Zion Church show Abraham and Margaretha has having 7 daughters. Children:

John b. 1769 m. Margaretta Kroniger in Wiesenberg, Lehigh Co, Pa.  Died 1867 in Gutherie Co, IA. It was said that Margaret carried water for the Colonial Soldiers when she was 10 years old. Children:  (Margaretha's sister, Elizabeth Kroninger married David Luckenbiel.  They had a daughter, Susan Luckenbiel)   (For more information on this family, contact  Diane Reed.

George Andreas Luckenbill  b. 1782 d. 1826 Pine Grove m. Anna Maria Lengel b. 1783 d, 1823 Pine Grove. Buried at Hetzel's Church Cemetary.  (Andreas was listed as the son of Johan Ekel in the History of Berks county Bibliographies.  Because of the date of his birth, I would think he would be a grandson or a great-grandson.

Jost Luckenbill

This name has been quite a mystery. I have a copy of the Administration Records at the time of death and he is listed only as Jost.  In the records of Christ Reform Church 1765-1832, he is listed as Joshua Luckenbill m. Susanna Yoder who had Elizabeth.  In the Zion's Records, there is a mention of a Jost Henry Luckenbill who had Johann Abraham 29 Jun 1779.  In other records, he is mentioned as Joseph.  Also, there is a listing for a child of a Thomas Yost Luckenbill and Susanna Yoder as having a son George Andreas luckenbill 1775.  It all is a bit confusing..So, For records sake, I will just list him as Jost until we have further information.
